Welcome to Institute of Genetics and Animal Breeding PAS

The Institute of Genetics and Animal Breeding of the Polish Academy of Sciences originates from the Department of Experimental Animal Breeding, which was created by the Polish Academy of Sciences in 1955.

The Institute is a part of the Division Two: Biological and Agricultural Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The Scientific Council of the Institute has the right to confer the degree of Doctor (PhD) and Habilited Doctor (DSc) of Agricultural Sciences. Since 1994 the Institute runs postgraduate studies. The Institute publishes scientific journal “Animal Science Papers and Reports” – an English language quarterly indexed in the Journal Citation Reports/Science Edition of Thomson Reuters.

The staff of the Institute numbers 140 persons, including 50 researchers and 23 PhD students. The Institute has six scientific departments: Department of Molecular Biology, Department of Experimental Embryology, Department of Animal Improvement, Department of Genomics and BIodiversity and Department of Animal Behaviour. Besides, the Institute owns an Experimental Farm keeping various farm and laboratory animals (cattle, horses, sheep, goats, rabbits, quails and mice). Such a unique scientific infrastructure enables to undertake modern and diverse research topics.

The principal fields of the basic research include: molecular genetics, experimental embryology, animal biotechnology, and the genetic basis of stress physiology and animal ethology. Moreover, applied research is conducted in the fields of population genetics, animal breeding, as well as animal maintenance and production systems. Studies on animal behaviour and welfare are an important complement. The principal purpose of applied research is the elaboration of such methods of animal improvement and sustainable production systems which aim at obtaining safe and functional food, ensuring a high level of animal welfare and limiting the unfarourable effect of agriculture on the natural environment.

The Institute is a member of: the Polish Technology Platform for Food cooperating with the European Technology Platform “Food for Life”; the European Technology Platform for Farm Animal Breeding and Reproduction (FABRE) and the European Association of Research Managers and Administrators (EARMA). The representatives of the Institute are also members of the Polish National Council of EU Research Projects’ Coordinators (KRAB) and COST programme.

An article in NATURE Careers Community written by Magdalena Śmiech

Magdalena Śmiech, from the Department of Experimental Embryology, IGAB has published an article in NATURE Careers Community. In 2018 she completed a highly competitive Summer Program at RIKEN Center for Brain Science (CBS) in Wako, Japan. Magdalena Śmiech participated in a two-month laboratory internship and in an intensive 5-day lecture course delivered by the best specialists in scientific field. Her professional experiences from internship are available on the NATURE website: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-018-07869-x

Visit from the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality

On December 12, 2018, the Institute was visited by Ms. Marjolijn Sonnema – Director General for Agro from the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality. She was accompanied by the representatives of the Dutch Embassy in Warsaw (Agricultural Counsellor Martijn Homan & Katarzyna Kowalczewska) and Annie de Veer – Director Wageningen Livestock Research from Wageningen University & Research.

Success of dr Taniguchi in Horizon 2020

International consortium with participation of Hiroaki Taniguchi, PhD from Department of Experimental Embryology was very successful in Horizon 2020 program (call SFS-30-2018-2019-2020) and has obtained financing in the amount of ca. 6 million EUR for realisation of the project BovReg – „Identification of functionally active genomic features relevant to phenotypic diversity and plasticity in cattle”.

Gene Editing and Cell Fate Reprogramming Researchers from the Institute of Genetics and Animal Breeding of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Max-Delbrück-Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin, described how the mitochondria have been implicated in the processes of acquisition and loss of stemness, with a specific focus on pluripotency and energy metabolism of the pluripotent stem cells.

Dr Taniguchi helps to promote Polish science

Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Tokyo has sent to Director of the Institute special thanks to doctor Taniguchi from IGAB PAS, for help in organisation of the scientific forum „Polish Medicine in XXIst century”, which will be held in the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Tokyo.
